Firefighters are called to blaze at derelict building
FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze at a derelict building.
The fire service responded to a fire on Irvin Drive, Heald Green at 8.20am on Friday, a spokesperson said.
The blaze started on the first floor of the two-storey building.
Images on social media showed the fire and smoke billow into the air around the scene.
A statement from a spokesperson at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 8.20am today (Friday March 1) four fire engines from Wythenshawe, Cheadle, and Stockport fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving the first floor of a derelict two-storey building on Irvin Drive, Heald Green.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using two hose reels to control the blaze.”
The fire was put out by 10.30am with two fire trucks still in attendance along with an employee from the gas network and construction services. The owner of the property was also on scene.
After checking to ensure all gas in the house was capped the employee from the gas network confirmed that ‘the fire was not gas related’.
A member of the fire service on scene said they are ‘not sure how the fire started’ but believe lodgers may have entered the property through an open window and could ‘have been involved’.
A resident who was walking by near the scene, and had seen the blaze earlier that morning said: “I just saw all the smoke in the air and knew that a fire must have started near the car park.
“I’ve never seen a fire up close before so it worried me a bit, I’m glad its out now.”
Emergency services, construction and gas network workers left the scene around 11am, turning responsibility of the property back over to the owner.
