Judges’ pie praise for popular chippy dish

- BY JENNA CAMPBELL

ACHIPPY has taken home a bronze medal for one of its dishes at a national awards – but not for its fish and chips.

As much as Brits love a good chippy tea, they also love a pie, and thankfully, many of the best fish and chip shops across the region, also serve up a stellar selection of the beloved pastry.

That’s certainly the case for a takeaway in Marple Bridge, which has won an award for one its latest additions.

Town Street Fryer in Marple Bridge took home third place for its Chicken and Leek Pie at the British Pie Awards 2024. The shop serves up a wide variety of pies including some from Holland’s Pies and its own range made in-house too, earning them the title of ‘pie nirvana’ by some of its customers.

Sharing the news on Facebook, the team at Town Street Fryer wrote: “After than less than a year of making pies we have gone and got a Bronze medal for our Chicken and Leek pie at the British Pie Awards.”

They added that over 900 pies were submitted to the annual awards from 179 pie makers – making the bronze medal even more of an achievement. And the chippy’s followers were quick to congratulate the Marple Bridge shop on its award.

“Well done Richard and team, you pies are Bangin,” wrote one person, a sentiment echoed by many others in the comments.

Another added: “Absolutely brilliant and well deserved. What a difference you have made to MB.” A third wrote: “Had my very 1st pie from there last week. Absolutely gorgeous, congratulations on your award, I definitely will be back.”

As well as fish, chips and sausages, the pies have become a mainstay of Town Street Fryer in the Stockport village.

Split into three sections – veggie and vegan (all £4.50), homemade (£4.50) and Holland’s Pies (£2.70), there’s a staggering 17 to choose from.

The homemade pies include the cheese and onion, which many on TripAdvisor have described as ‘to die for’ and ‘pie nirvana’, as well as the chicken and mushroom and steak and ale, plus the award-winning chicken and leek.

Two weeks ago marked British Pie Week 2024, with the pie awards taking place as part of the annual event on March 6. This year saw 147 food experts test out pies from across the nation and decide the cream of the crop.

The awards span 24 different categories, with a fish and chip shop in Barnard Castle in Durham taking home the top title of Supreme Champion for a minted Wensleydale lamb and potato pie. Other categories include best Melton Mowbray Pork Pie, Best Pasty, Best Fish Pie and Best Vegetarian Pie.

Last October, the eatery on Town Street in Marple Bridge was shortlisted among the 40 best chippies in the UK. It joined Bury’s Chips No.8 in Prestwich as one of the finalists going after the coveted Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year 2024, an annual awards run by the National Federation of Fish Friers.
