Reddish Vale trio fire hole-in-one hat-trick

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

HOLES in one are very rare in golf and the majority of golfers can go through their entire golfing lives without achieving an ace with the odds on an amateur getting a hole-in-one reckoned to be 12,500-1.

Reddish Vale Golf Club is an exception to this rule with plenty of members getting holes in one in the past year.

Now what could be a club, county or national record has been witnessed at Reddish Vale GC on the par three ninth hole with three aces on the hole in just two weeks.

First up was Tommy Martin playing with the Seniors section and his trusty 8-iron tee shot pitched 18 inches past the pin with controlled backspin for his first-ever ace.

A few days later came the second from Jacob Astley playing in the Pro’s Stableford with his ace coming from a clinical pitching wedge.

The hat-trick was completed by Macauley Dentith with a nine-iron tee shot which spun back into the hole in a Team Three from Four Stableford.

Vale legend Dave Sanders said:”Congratulations to all three I have never heard of anything like this happening at Reddish Vale or any other club but it was certainly good for bar sales!”

Davenport’s dynamic duo Jamie and Scott Howarth got the Manchester Alliance season back on track after the wettest-ever February and a great lack of golf playability across the region.

The first two fixtures had been postponed at Hart Common and Stand Golf Clubs but great work at Bury by course manager Dave Berry and his staff saw 18 holes available for play and this was backed by friendly and efficient hospitality in the clubhouse.

There were plenty of smiles and friendly banter as a busy Alliance field enjoyed the return to action.

Dominating the early scores were Poulton Park’s Alex Pritchard and Terry Broadhurst 42 and Alliance legend Phil Archer and his Leigh partner Mark Pasquill (Leigh) 42 with Phil putting the individual pro target of 38 at the top of the table.

Then the Howarth brothers stepped in with Scott combining with club colleague Dave Waldron-Kelly to win the pro am section with 46 four more than Alex Pritchard and Terry Broadhurst.

In joint third place on 42 were Andy Palmer (Chorley) and Paul Barlow (Stamford), Phil Kelly and Martin Dwyer (Stamford) and Phil Archer and Mark Pasquill. Scott Howarth made it a double in the individual pro section with 39, one more than little brother

Jamie, Phil Archer and Phil Kelly.

The am am section also produced some hot scoring led by home duo Mick Holmes Cheadle and late substitute Colin Stephenson (Bury) 46 ahead of Richard Blackwell (Mottram Hall) and table tennis legend John Hilton (Davenport) 44 and Ian Taylor and Keith White (Ashton-in-Makerfield) after a cpo on 43 from Criag Gilligan (High Legh Park) and Leigh Centurions rugby league star John Asiata (Hart Common).

Taking the final prize for Nearest the pin was Scott Jackson (Disley).

Stockport Golf Club Lady Captain Karen Desai was delighted to be able to present a cheque for over £9,000 to her chosen charity of St Ann’s Hospice.

Karen said:”The reason for my choice was to give something back to St Ann’s Hospice not only because of the end of life care they gave my Mum but the support they gave me and my sisters. It’s all about a piece of cake and on a very dark day we went to the volunteer cafe and ordered tea and the lady who served us took my hand and said “why don’t you have a piece of cake” and at that time that cake felt like a huge best hug you ever had and that’s when I was determined at some point to give back.

“I was delighted to have raised just over £9000’

“I started my year by raffling my car parking space at the club for the year and this gave me a great kick start as it raised £1,140.

“The main events were the charity coffee morning where Judith from St Ann’s was my speaker, there was plenty of tears shed that afternoon as Judith shared her own experiences which led her to work for St Ann’s

“This was followed by a charity lunch and the biggest fund raiser was my charity golf day.

“My thanks go to everyone who believed and supported me, members of the club, my family and friends for their never ending generosity, giving up their time to attend events and putting up with my relentless badgering

“And of course my husband Rajesh (who was then vice captain) without him I would not have remained so focused.

“Julie Peters, Judith Lacy and Imogen Priestley-Bird, who work for St Ann’s, came down to receive the cheque and I was delighted when they told me that my name and contribution was displayed on the new display wall they have at St Ann’s.

Judith said: “Karen has done amazing fundraising at Stockport GC and it will go towards the final £1million that we need to raise to build our brand new, purpose built hospice in Heald Green.”
