Theatre is set to reopen in summer after repairs

- DECLAN CAREY

THE Forum Theatre in Romiley is set to reopen this summer after RAAC repairs.

Dangerous concrete was first found in the building in 2017, and managed in line with industry standards until August when government guidance was updated.

This led to the theatre’s closure last September.

Stockport council has now appointed a contractor – Robertson Construction – to carry out repairs after providing £300,000 for the work.

Phase one of the work includes the foyer, theatre, toilets and back of house areas.

Following the opening of these areas, phase two will include further support and community spaces.

Coun Frankie Singleton, cabinet member for communities, culture and sport at Stockport council, said: “I am delighted that such a much-loved and valued community asset will be able to reopen to the public and for use by NK Theatre Arts soon.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their support, patience and positive attitude while the RAAC situation has been ongoing, it has been a really challenging issue with many complex elements.

“As our tenure as Greater Manchester’s Town of Culture draws to a close leaving a lasting legacy for the Arts scene in Stockport, the efforts behind the scenes and repair work will mean the venue can continue to be used safely for generations to come.”

A campaign group called Free the Forum had been putting pressure on the council to fund the repairs.

NK Theatre Arts (NKTA) – the company managing the theatre – claimed in February that it had lost more than £50,000 in the time the building has been shut.

The town hall said it has approached central government bodies to request funding for the repairs in line with the approach taken to schools and colleges. But councillors in Stockport recently accused the government of not being willing to provide more money towards RAAC repairs across the country.

The council stated it will work alongside NKTA to fund a package of works that will allow the permanent reopening of the site and secure the long-term future of the theatre and community centre.
