Online is the way forward in raising our vital funds

- WRITTEN BY RYAN PERKINS, HEAD OF TRADING-RETAIL AT ST ANN’S HOSPICE

ST Ann’s Hospice has charity shops across Greater Manchester that contribute towards the income of our charity.

These include shops in Romiley, Stockport, Cheadle and Heald Green.

Over the past few years we have expanded into online marketplaces and we have raised so much money for our hospice from this.

The rise in online marketplaces has added to the funds raised for so many charity shops, and all of us at St Ann’s want to encourage more people to support us in this way.

We love that more sustainability has been created through these marketplaces and we’ve benefitted from people buying to resell from our shops.

We encourage this as St Ann’s is still benefitting from getting the price of the sale, so we don’t mind that someone may go on to resell that item.

Many people may assume that people are donating less and choosing to sell items instead, because of the ease of online marketplaces such as Depop and Vinted.

However, we haven’t seen this and are still grateful for all that gets donated to us.

We’ve seen the volume of donations in the charity retail sector continuing to be high especially for hospice shops.

I think that is definitely an opportunity for collaboration between online marketplaces and charity shops.

I think most charities now have an online presence that works alongside their charity shops and I think this will definitely rise even more.

There are lots of different streams that can help charities with online marketplaces.

With eBay you can list an item of yours and then donate a percentage of that to a charity – but I’m not sure that that’s widely known.

I’m certain online is the way forward, we’re hearing lots about this in the charity retail sector.

Since the pandemic there has been a shift towards online as that’s what everyone got used to, so now I think most charities are currently ●●ST ANN’S Hospice provides holistic care to patients with lifelimiting illnesses – comprising inpatient care, day therapy and supportive outpatient services from its sites at Heald Green, Stockport and Little Hulton.
