Remembering the fallen of Great War
Preparations for exhibition are well on track
Festivals Crieff, organisers of this year’s Crieff Remembers to commemorate the First World War and the centenary of the battle of Passchendale, are well on the way to realising their ambitious plans
An open weekend at the end of last year generated even more material towards the project’s showpiece exhibition.
Jean Ann Scott Miller told the Herald: “We are completely confident that we will be presenting an exhibition that will honour the fallen and those who served and survived, as well as the wives, parents and sweethearts at home.”
Mrs Scott Miller explained that the memorabilia, accounts and photographs gathered will contribute to an important archive and lasting legacy for Strathearn.
She added: “We will be compiling a detailed catalogue – not a potted history of the First World War, but the families’ accounts of the men and women to whom these precious relics belonged, a tangible link between Crieff in 1917 and Crieff 100 years later.
“We were particularly touched by the mother and daughter who had travelled up from South Shields to show us the Military Medal won by James Brough, formerly of East High Street.”
More funding is being sought to stage the exhibition and various other related events in the Strath capital this summer.
Mrs Scott Miller added: “We have received substantial funding from the Crieff Succeeds BID, and from Artemis Investment Management, to both of whom we are extremely grateful.
“We still need to source at least another £5000, but are confident that we shall reach our target, and that ‘Crieff Remembers’ will be a very significant contribution to the local and national commemoration programme for the First World War.”
Festivals Crieff will have a stall at the forthcoming Better Place to Live Fair at Strathearn Community Campus, on March 18 from 11am to 3pm. More information will be available about the fascinating project, as well as ways to get involved and contribute.
