- Lynn Duke

Eight intrepid teams of oarsmen and women sprinted to their boats for a good start to the 2017 Great Loch Earn Boat Race organised by Crieff Round Table.

Setting off from the shores at Lochearnhead the teams rowed the length of the loch to benefit good causes.

Winners of the Loch Earn Quaich were the Austrian Downhill Squad - Richard Graham, Bruce Leckie, Steve Howell and Johnathon Dovey - who were raising money for Cornhill Macmillan Centre. Not far behind was the Crieff Juniors boat, Myles to Go - John Myles, Kevin Porter, Martin Revie and Aaron Myles. Third in was ladies team the Bay City Rowers - Kirsty Campbell, Anna Olsen, Hazel Johnson and Suzanne McLean - raising money for CLIC Sergeant.

The Spirit of the Race award went to two boats this year - the Pink Ladies, raising money for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland and Dragon’s Flame, raising money for Kids’ Week in Crieff.

Afterwards, Tabler Jamie Russell said: “Crieff Round Table were delighted to organise another successful boat race which this year was helped by a strong following wind resulting in fast times and an exciting close finish.

“As usual all the teams entered into the spirit of the race with an array of colourful costumes and raised hundreds of pounds for various good causes. The Round Table would like to thank Drummond Fisheries for providing the boats and the Clachan Cottage in Lochearnhead and the Achray House Hotel in St Fillans for providing hospitality at the start and finish line respectively.

“Race prizes were also generously donated from local businesses including the Four Seasons and Loch Earn Brewery in St Fillans, the Murray Park Hotel in Crieff and the Hot Box at Taymouth Marina.

“Finally huge thanks also to all the volunteers who gave up their own time to make the event possible including Comrie First Response and the Safety Boat Captains and all the other Round Table volunteers for their help and assistance in the run up to the event. We look forward to receiving team entries for next years race!”
