Election special
Hustings in Crieff
Strath residents have the chance to quiz Westminster election candidates for the area at a hustings set to take place at Strathearn Artspace on Wednesday, May 31.
Putting their hats into the ring for the forthcoming General Election on June 8 for the Ochil and South Perthshire seat are Luke Graham ( Conservative), Joanne Ross ( Labour), Iliyan Stefanov (Lib-Dem) and current MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh (SNP).
Doors open at 6.30pm for the Crieff hustings and the advice is to get there early as last time round the event was so popular people had to be turned away at the door.
Entry is free but donations to the Artspace will be welcomed.
Strathearn Artspace project leader David Campbell said: “The proceedings will start at 7pm.
“The hustings will give the community of Strathearn the opportunity to quiz the prospective candidates of the forthcoming election. We have invited them all.
“The last time we did this we had to turn away people as the hall was full.
“The feeling was that it was a valuable exercise and that is why we want to do it again. Strathearn Artspace Trustee Neil Combe will chair the event.”
In the 2015 election, Ms Ahmed Sheikh took 46% of the votes with 26,620 crosses beside her name.
Labour’s Gordon Banks – who representated the area previously – received 16,452 votes (28.43%); Mr Graham 11,987 ( 20.71%) and Mr Stefanov 1481 (2.56%).
There was also a UKIP candidate – unlike on this occasion – who received 1331 votes.
The turnout was 74.8%.
