Dug-outs piled up with dead bodies in France

-

Last Sunday our troops captured a further section of the Hindenburg Line on a front of over a mile, and maintained their gains in the face of fierce counter-attacks by the enemy, on whom we inflicted heavy losses.

The French delivered successful attacks at the Maronvilles Massif in Champagne. They carried several lines of enemy trenches and all the important observation posts are now in their hands. Eight hundred prisoners were taken and the shattered German dug-outs were found piled up with dead.

On Tuesday, Sir Douglas Haig reported successful raids by our troops around Armentieres. He also announced the destruction of a large German ammunition dump on the Arras-Cambrai road.

Our aviators continue to maintain their supremecy over the enemy.

Twenty-seven merchant vessels were sunk during the week ended May 20.

On May 4, the British transport steamer , Transylvania, with troops on board was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, and sunk with a loss of 413 lives. The survivors were picked up by the escorting destroyers. All accounts emphasise the splendid bearing of a party of 66 Red Cross nurses who were among the saved. The survivors were landed in an Allied country, where the people were kindness itself. The people of the city fitted them out as best they could and allowed them to have goods from shops without payment.
