Council’s plea to people who could adopt a child

- Clare Damodaran

Perth and Kinross Council is keen to hear from new potential adoptive parents in Strathearn who would like to adopt children in need of a permanent, loving family.

There can be a range of reasons why children are unable to grow up with their birth families.

A few children are adopted with the agreement or at the request of their birth parents.

However, most are adopted after a formal decision is made that they need to have a new family to help them grow and be the best they can be.

Adoptions are granted through the courts and give adopters all legal rights and responsibilities for the child.

Anyone wanting to adopt needs to be over 21 years old, and can be single people or couples.

Understanding, compassion, flexibility, patience and empathy with the issues that children have experienced are vital personal qualities.

The council has a thorough assessment process, and successful applicants will receive full training, and ongoing support as required.

The council’s lifelong learning convener, Councillor Caroline Shiers, said:“Adoption is one way that children can thrive in a family environment and we are always looking for new adoptive parents to meet the needs of children here in Perth and Kinross.

“This week is national adoption week, and I would encourage anyone thinking about whether they could become an adoptive parent to get in touch with our adoption team.

“It is a major commitment to make, but we want to hear from anyone who is ready for a challenge and keen to give a child the security of a home and family for a lifetime.”
