A fishy occurrence as lorry loses its load
Crieff Municipal Bowling Green was cited as one reason for granting the application for a full hotel certificate at a sitting of the Central District Licensing Court in Crieff.
Mr WD Frier, representing Joseph Carmichael of the Rosebank Hotel, said that bowlers had to be refused a drink after their matches because the hotel did not have a full licence.
Crieff Town Council was trying to reverse the loss on this bowling green. Mr Frier suggested a full licence for Rosebank might just be the shot in the arm the green needs and might turn last year’s deficit of £300 into a profit.
Provost James Drummond, Auchterarder, commented that while he approved the application, he was not very happy about the picture painted of “drouthy bowlers”.
He is Perthshire’s Scottish Bowling Association representative. Mr Frier hastened to explain that no adverse reflection on bowlers had been intended and the application was granted.
Tons of freshly caught fish partially blocked the St Fillans to Lochearnhead road for over two hours on Saturday evening when a lorry lost part of its load at a sharp corner. The mishap occurred as the articulated truck was rounding a bend. Six tons of the 18- ton load slithered overboard to form a gleaming mountain over the verge and eastbound carriage.
While a single line of traffic inched through the slime, police from Comrie and Killin tackled the obstacle with shovels.
