Records fall at annual contest

Young arrow aces shine in Worcester Challenge

- SPORTS REPORTER

Records tumbled during a successful recent tournament organised by Crieff Archery Club.

Members competed during the annual Worcester Challenge at Strathearn Community Campus on Saturday, November 2.

Archers shoot at a target with a 40-centimetre face from a distance of 20 yards.

Each end comprises five arrows, and the maximum possible score after the 60-shot round is complete is 300.

The Worcester Challenge is slightly different to the club’s other competitions as the target used is black with a small, white, centre which scores five points.

And Crieff Archery Club shoots a double round as a matter of course, meaning each participant fires off 120 arrows in the hope of securing the maximum 600 points during the contest.

Club member Allan McDougall organised the event and Tricia Thomson performed the role of Lady Paramount – a ceremonial role involving the presentation of trophies at the end of the day

Allan, shooting using a compound bow, scored 298 points in the first round – beating the previous benchmark of 294.

Elsewhere, Thomas King shot a new club record in the U14 section with 198, adding 18 to what was the top total prior to the competition.

Meanwhile Theo Thomson (10) scored 762 in a special round geared to younger members and set a new club record in what was his first competition.

Club president Alex Cargill said: “All in all, the shooting was of a very high standard with a number of our new members shooting very well.

“At the end of our prize- giving, members went to Craobh restaurant in Crieff and enjoyed an excellent meal and discussed the day’s shooting.

“Particular thanks goes to Allan McDougall who organised the event extremely well, including all the trophies.

“A big thank you should also go to our Lady Paramount Tricia Thomson.”
