TOP BOWLS DAY

- JOHNATHONJ MENZIES

Blackford Bowling Club was the venue for this year’s Perth and Kinross Disability Sport Lawn Bowls Championships.

The event, held for just the second time on Saturday, saw 38 competitors from across the country do battle in a variety of categories on the well-kept Strath green.

Four categories – for wheelchair users, people with learning disabilities, those with physical disabilities and players with visual impairments - were contested.

The turnout was good on the day, with organisers Perth and Kinross Disability Sport saying the number of players taking part was twice as much compared to when the tournament was last held at the same venue in 2019.

“We had an absolutely amazing day,” said Graeme Doig, of Perth and Kinross Disability Sport.

“Thank you so much to everyone who attended – the bowlers, coaches, family and friends.

“The support and encouragement for every bowler made it a special day for all.

“It was brilliant seeing such a high standard of play all day long from bowlers from across the country. Our Perth and Kinross bowlers had a very successful day, too.”

Graeme added: “We’d like to thank Fiona and Bill Taylor at Blackford Bowling Club, Jackie Campbell and her team for keeping all fed and watered and Ron McArthur and the team of umpires and markers.”

Appreciation was also shown to the numerous sponsors.

These included Scott Laurie of Fell Financial Planning in Stirling, Ray Burnie of Caledonia Will Services in Auchterarder and Susan Campbell of local garage Lamb and Gardiner.

The event acted as a Scottish Disability Sport National Lawn Bowls Championships qualifier.

Seven of the region’s bowlers will now head for Aberdeen this weekend. • Results on the day were as follows: Wheelchair section - 1 Steve Key (Inchture Bowling Club); 2 Jimmy Keir (Forth Valley); 3 Lizzie Jackson (Forth Valley).

Bowlers with a learning disability - 1 Graeme Panton (Blackford Bowling Club); 2 Frazer Hutchison (Luncarty Bowling Club); 3 Jamie Leigh Lutton (Auchterarder Bowling Club).

Bowlers with a physical disability ( ambulant) - 1 Glen Livingston (Disability Sport Fife), 2 Stuart Chesby (Fife), 3 Daniel Porter (Borders).

Bowlers with a visual impairment - 1 Walker Moir (Forth Valley), 2 Sylvia Johnston (Tayside), 3 Lynn Barr (North Lanarkshire).
