Sad state of some of our town’s treasures

- Dear Editor Ian Hamilton, Crieff, by email

I found a visit to the Monuments at the Old Town Hall in Crieff last week quite disheartening.

I have come to the conclusion that, because of the apathy and indifference of Perth and Kinross Council and Culture Perth and Kinross in relation to the Crieff Monuments – allied to the continuing dissemination of “fake news and views” by a hardcore of Crieff residents who have resisted professional advice on the optimum long-term location for the Monuments – I am wasting my time and energy supporting their relocation to the community campus. There’s none so blind as those who will not see!

The condition of the display area is awful, with much blistering and shedding of the painted plasterwork – both towards Torlum Hill.

Readers can send their pictures by email to news@strathearnherald.co.uk. on the stairway and the cell containing the stocks.

In addition, two of the three information iPads were (again) inoperative.

The whole marketing environment is third rate and would not be tolerated in Perth Museum or the new City Hall – but ‘out of sight, out of mind’ appears to be the operating mantra emanating from Perth these days.

Over recent years I have met with Helen Smout and Kenny McWilliam of CPK, and representatives from

Crieff Community Trust and Drummond Arms Regeneration Limited to discuss the future of the Monuments.

All have stated that there is no intention to establish a new museum in the Town Hall or in the Drummond Arms, or elsewhere in Crieff – including any future heritage centre in the Drummond Arms.

They can also be posted on the Herald’s Facebook page with a short description and contact details.

I have been a witness to this pathetic farce for 12 years now, witnessing all forms of political manoeuvring, illconsidered and futile ideas, over-inflated egos and a huge measure of cronyism.

None of this has taken us one inch further forward.

I believe the lead should come from CPK and PKC, but no one in these organisations

appears to have the overall authority, vision and commitment to ensuring a well deserved future for our town’s irreplaceable Monuments.

How terribly sad.
