Time running out to support charity event
A pop-up gallery and gift shop has been set up in Crieff to raise money to help those in need in Lebanon.
Stirred by first-hand reports of the suffering in the Middle East nation – especially the capital, Beirut – Strathearn resident Dorothy Logan’s fundraiser will see donations given to humanitarian aid team Lavishing Love on Lebanon.
The group is headed by Melanie Wixwat, daughter of Strathearn couple Pastor Robin and Lamorna Riches, and niece of Pastor Bob and Moyra Rodd.
This small team started helping 25 families, a number which has grown to 150 nearly one year later.
Each month they deliver food, medicine, baby supplies and household necessities to all these families, and help in other emergency situations such as with hospital bills and car repairs.
It comes as the aftermath of the Port of Beirut explosion in 2020 continues to wreak havoc, with Lebanon considered to be in the midst of its worst economic crisis in 150 years.
The situation has been exacerbated by the global Covid-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a high percentage of the population now living in poverty.
A successful artist and sculptor over the years, Dorothy wanted to make a difference and teamed-up with local artists and crafters who have given their work commissionfree.
As a result, Helping Hands Gallery, Crafts and Gift Shop has been set up at 11 James Square and runs until November 19.
The shop will be open from 10am to 4pm on Thursday this week and 1pm to 3.30pm on Friday.
The shop owner has donated the use of the premises rent-free.
To keep expenses to a minimum, purchase are by cash only.
A spokesperson for the pop-up gallery said: “Will you please help Melanie by visiting the shop and purchasing a unique work of art or gift, or by giving a donation.
“Please rest assured that all monies will go to Melanie in Beirut for her humanitarian aid project.
“Thank you for your generous support.”
