A recent pop-up gallery and gift shop in Crieff has raised £ 2090 towards helping those in need in Lebanon.

Stirred by first-hand reports of the suffering in the Middle East nation – especially the capital, Beirut – Strathearn resident Dorothy Logan’s fundraiser will donate to locally- inspired humanitarian aid team Lavishing Love on Lebanon.

The event was set up at the Helping Hands Gallery, Crafts and Gift Shop at 11 James Square from November 8-19.

The group is headed by Melanie Wixwat, daughter of Strathearn couple Pastor Robin and Lamorna Riches and niece of Pastor Bob and Moyra Rodd.

This small team started helping 25 families, a number which has since grown to 150 families.

Each month they deliver food, medicine, baby supplies and household necessities, as well as helping with things like hospital bills and car repairs.

A successful artist and sculptor over the years, Dorothy wanted to make a difference and teamed-up with local artists and crafters who gave their work commission-free.

This means all the money raised, except for electricity expenses, will go directly to Melanie’s project.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Melanie is absolutely delighted with this donation and wishes to thank everyone who went to the shop to support her work in Beirut for the families that have been affected by the 2020 explosion.

“This is the total amount of money raised and all of it, apart from a small amount to cover the electricity costs, is being sent to Melanie.

“A big thank you to everyone.” Lebanon is considered to be in the midst of its worst economic crisis in 150 years, a situation made worse by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
