Top Strath course to host next Senior Open
Area set to play role in prestigious contest for first time
Perthshire will be back on the golfing map next season.
The qualifying venues for the 2022 Senior Open Presented by Rolex were unveiled last week by The Legends Tour and The R&A.
The prestigious tournament – Europe’s only senior men’s championship – will be hosted by Gleneagles for the first time from July 21-24.
All the 2022 qualifying venues are located in Scotland with Ladybank Golf Club and Glenbervie Golf Club joining Blairgowrie, which will host an event on each of its two courses – the Rosemount and the Lansdowne.
The 2021 qualifying events, which were hosted in the south east of England at Sunningdale Golf Club, welcomed 393 hopefuls across the four venues, with 525 entering in 2019 and a record 591 golfers fighting for a spot in the prestigious championship the last time it was held in Scotland in 2018.
David Williams, tournament director of the Senior Open, said: “We are delighted to be holding qualifying events at three magnificent venues.
“The quality of these golf courses speak for themselves and we, along with our partners at The R&A and Gleneagles, are extremely happy with the tough but fair tests these venues will provide to hopefuls aiming to earn a spot in next year’s championship.”
Welshman Stephen Dodd won his first senior major championship at the 2021 Senior Open, held at Sunningdale Golf Club, and will defend his title at Gleneagles in 2022 against a field of the biggest names in over-50s golf.
The qualifying events will take place on Monday July 18, 2022, with official practice days taking place on the following two days.
Entry forms will be made available in due course.
