Comrie Fortnight in line for popular return

- LYNN DUKE

Plans are under way to ensure Comrie’s residents and visitors have something to look forward to this summer.

Members of the Comrie Fortnight committee met on Monday this week to discuss a return of the popular two-week extravaganza.

Comrie Fortnight Unlocked will take place from July 23 to August 6.

All the firm favourites, such as the Pet Show and Float Parade, are set to be included in the programme, as well as day trips and children’s activities.

But there will be a change of venue for some of the events as the Comrie Flood Protection Scheme, construction of which is due to commence in February, will render the Boulevard out of action.

And following a two- year absence from the traditional format due to the Covid pandemic, the committee is taking the opportunity to change things around slightly.

Chair James Stewart revealed that some of the traditional events, such as the Pram Derby, will be taking place on different days and at a different location than in the past.

Contingency plans are also being made in case coronavirus prevents indoor events, such as the bingo and quiz night, from being held.

Mr Stewart told the Herald: “When the pandemic started we didn’t think that it would cause us to miss two years of the Comrie Fortnight as we know it.

“In 2020 we managed to put on some activities for residents in a bumper brochure that was delivered to every household but last year, apart from a village treasure hunt that residents could do at their leisure, we had no activities.

“So we are looking forward to getting back to some form of normality this year and have begun making plans.

“It takes a lot of work to put on all of our activities and events, and we are lucky to have a committee of dedicated volunteers as well as additional helpers during the Comrie Fortnight.

“We are planning to freshen things up by changing around some of the programme and we will announce our finalised plans in due course.”
