Judges to help mark 20th year

Royal Highland Show role for locals

- LYNN DUKE

The Royal Highland Show will mark its 200th anniversary when it reopens its gates to the public this year.

The national rural showcase is taking place from June 23-26.

Organisers the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society Scotland (RHASS) announced the judges for this year’s event earlier this month.

Those tasked with placing the country’s top cattle, sheep, horses and goats come from far and wide, from local names to those travelling from as far afield as Australia .

And the Strath’s William McLaren and Wilson Peters will be amongst those casting their experienced eyes over Scotland’s biggest and best display of livestock.

Mr McLaren from Auchterarder will be judging the Herefords, while Mr Peters of Monzie will be judging the Commercial Cattle.

Both are well-known on the showing and sale scene. Mr Peters is a five times Scottish National Fat Stock champion.

Alan Laidlaw, chief executive of the RHASS, commented: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming back some familiar faces to the judging line up this year, with many of our judges returning after being asked to initially judge at the cancelled 2020 Royal Highland Show.

“Our esteemed roster of judges includes some of the best, brightest and most respected professionals that the livestock world has to offer, and I can’t wait to see them and our competitors in action in the show rings this June.”

Livestock entries will open in early April when the schedule of competitions will also be released.

Due to capacity restrictions and Covid-safety requirements, the RHASS is asking members to let it know in advance which show days they intend to attend.

RHASS chairman Bill Gray, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our members to the show following last year’s hybrid showcase and the cancellation of the 2020 event. We are particularly excited to unveil our members pavilion which has been waiting patiently for the Show to return.

“Capacity restrictions and Covid-safe requirements will mean we are asking members to let us know in advance which show days they intend to attend.

“This will be done online and, in the new year, each member will need to provide us with an individual email address so we can process members’ passes efficiently and effectively.”

For non-RHASS members, tickets are on sale now.

Mr Gray added: “With many months in the planning, we are so looking forward to what will be four thrilling days at the Royal Highland Show 2022.

“There is no doubt that we have come a long way since the first show 200 years ago.

“However, the animals remain the star attraction so we look forward to welcoming our exhibitors along with the wider agricultural community.”
