Picnic bench is in honour of Gordon

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

A picnic bench was placed in Comrie’s Laggan Park on Friday last week in honour of Gordon McCartney, who sadly passed away last September.

The seating was donated by Comrie Community Council to honour the fact that Gordon had served on the voluntary group for 46 years – making him the longest-serving community councillor in Scotland.

He was rewarded for this with a special civic reception in 2016, and a letter from the First Minister.

Gordon’s widow, June, said he would be deeply touched by the commemorative bench.

Community councillor Gillian Brock, Gordon’s stepdaughter, said: “Gordon fought tirelessly, along with the help of others, to introduce the skate park as the children of Comrie were desperate for one.

“Several times he would say: ‘That is my legacy to the children of Comrie.’ So it is only appropriate that this bench is placed here.”

She continued: “Gordon was on many committees over the years.

“He was also instrumental in getting the funding to completely rejuvenate St Kessog’s Square. Sadly, he isn’t around to see the end result.

“Gordon lived and breathed Comrie. A lot of what he did for the village, he did under the radar.

“He was a gentle, private, man who didn’t look for recognition – it was just in his blood to care for Comrie.

“Gordon will be sorely missed by many.”
