‘High five’ after Rory’s second title of season
Now squash star all set to play world champs
Strath squash star Rory Stewart claimed his second title of the season at the end of last month.
The former Crieff High School pupil’s latest success story came at the Liverpool Cricket Club Open with a final win over England’s Joe Lee.
Originally from Muthill, Stewart entered the Challenger 5 level tournament as number two seed and quickly showed why.
He started in round one against Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani and recorded a 12-10, 11-3, 4-11, 12-10 victory.
That set up a quarter-final tie with New Zealand’s Temwa Chileshe, one of four unseeded players, later that day.
Stewart was in fine form and stormed to a 11-4, 11-3, 11-5 triumph in just 33 minutes.
The semi-final showdown against Ben Smith of England followed suit with a 11-6, 11-2, 11-5 win.
This meant number eight seed Lee stood between Stewart and the trophy.
However, after a lengthy first game, it became a straightforward victory for local talent Stewart.
He showed off his range of skills in a 11- 9, 11- 7, 11- 3 title- winning performance.
Stewart has now turned his attention to this week’s WSF World Doubles Squash Championships on home soil.
He will pull on Scotland colours at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre event in Glasgow.
After getting under way on Tuesday, the contest runs until Saturday this week.
Maggie Still, Scottish Squash chief executive, said: “Bringing the WSF World Doubles Championships to Glasgow is a wonderful opportunity.
