Extra time for heritage showcase at campus

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

An exhibition designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Strathearn Archaeological and Historical Society has been extended.

The showcase – curated in conjunction with the Society’s members, friends and library staff – began in October last year and is now scheduled to be on show inside Crieff ’s Strathearn Community Library until May 28.

Accessible during library opening hours, the exhibition features Crieff High School’s collection of museum- quality replica artefacts based on key archaeological finds discovered close to the school.

It also includes donations by well- known Scottish metal detectorist, Hugh McCreadie.

In addition, the exhibition features nails from the famous find of almost one million excavated at Inchtuthil Roman Fort, and hypocaust tile fragments from a Roman bathhouse – both almost 2000 years old and loaned by Society members.

There is also a cannonball, found near the ruined Innerpeffray Castle, loaned for the exhibition by Innerpeffray Library.

Society vice-chair Ian Hamilton said: “Our library staff are wonderful ambassadors for the area’s rich history, archaeological sites and cultural attractions and have enjoyed their interaction with the many visitors to the exhibition.

“Due to its popularity, the exhibition has been extended until late May, and we hope visitors will also take the opportunity to walk around the town’s archaeology trail within the campus grounds.

“None of Scotland’s other 350 secondary schools has such a feature.

“A leaflet about the trail is available in the library or at the school’s main reception area.”

Mr Hamilton continued: “The council has undertaken considerable alterations to the pavement system both on Broich Road and within the school grounds, thus making access to the campus and the trail easier and safer – especially in view of housing developments in the Broich Road area.”
