VALE ARE INTO THE QUARTERS

Crieff side progress with game to spare

- SPORTS REPORTER

Vale of Earn progressed from the group stage of the League Cup with a game to spare following victory over Breadalbane.

The 5-1 away win took place in tricky conditions in Highland Perthshire on Thursday night last week.

Chances were few and far between early on before a moment of brilliance from Jordan Crerar helped to break the deadlock for the Crieff side.

A lovely piece of skill from the Comrie lad left his marker red-faced and he followed this up with a great pass to Paddy Ward, who would go on to open the scoring.

Vale made it 2-0 when Ward grabbed his second after chasing the ball down and beating the keeper from a tight angle.

The men from Market Park lost a sloppy goal from a free-kick just before half-time to allow the home side back into it and make it 2-1 prior to the break for half-time.

Vale tweaked their line- up at the break and the changes saw them grab more of a foothold in the encounter.

The visitors added to their tally when Jack Howie’s persistence down the left finally saw the Breadalbane defender turn the ball into his own net.

Substitute Fraser Gillies then scored with his first touch after neatly heading in from close range.

Kros Brown completed the scoring after rounding the keeper and finishing well.

Although the final scoreline perhaps flattered Vale a little, manager Garry Brock said he was pleased to progress to the quarter-finals.

Vale’s top performers on the night were deemed to be Jack Howie and Jamie Lee.

The final game of the section saw Vale take on Breadalbane at home on Tuesday night this week.

The early qualification meant it was hoped the squad could be rotated and those not on the pitch as much in recent weeks could be given valuable minutes at Market Park.

Josh Roberts and Jack Howie were on the scoresheet on the night during a 2-0 win.

Other League Cup results from Tuesday night this week were as follows:

Kettins 9, Stanley 0; Rattray 1, Balmoral Utd 0; Auchterarder Primrose 1, Letham Community 7; Letham Colts 0, Burrelton Rovers 13.

Amateur results from Saturday last week were:

Division One - Letham Community 1, Jeanfield Swifts 7. Division Two - Ballinluig 2, Alyth 4; Stanley 2, Fair City 8.

Fixtures for Thursday, April 14, are as follows:

Division One - Jeanfield Swifts v Burrelton Rovers; Letham Community v Luncarty ASC. Division Two - Rattray v Alyth. Smith League Cup - Kettins v Wolfhill.
