Pedal power will be on display at Muthill Sportive

Fundraising cycle event has routes to suit all abilities

-

Cyclists are getting into gear for this year’s Muthill Sportive.

Entries are now being accepted for the event – which will see hundreds take to the roads around the Strath on Saturday, June 11.

Participants will tackle one of four routes, stretching for either 3.7, 12.8, 31 or 65.5 miles and named ‘Green’, ‘ Yellow’, ‘ Blue’ and ‘Red’.

All routes start and finish at Muthill Parish Church and funds raised through entry fees will be used to support the development of the proposed 50-metre span bridge across the River Earn just south of Crieff.

An event spokesperson said: “The four routes mean there is something for everyone.

“Routes will be based on previous years, but with changes based on feedback we’ve had.

“As with all events these days, we will need to monitor Covid restrictions nearer the time – for example, this might mean no indoor catering and the use of social distancing etc.

“Funds from previous Sportives have supported the successful completion of phase one of the cycle path construction in 2016.

“The adjoining roads are now also designated as walking and cycling-friendly, with a reduced speed limit and signage by Perth and Kinross Council.

“Funds raised from this year’s Sportive will support development of the proposed 50m span bridge across the River Earn just south of Crieff.

“This will provide a safe cycling route to Crieff for all the community.

“Funds also go towards maintaining the existing stretch of cycle path.”

The spokesperson continued: “This is an event for all cyclists! We wanted to have a Sportive distance but also to make it available for local families and beginners so we have four routes available.

“They are indicative at the moment – we will finalise nearer the event and post updated routes here and on social media.

“The entry fee includes chipped timing, refreshments at the end and, for the Sportive distance, snacks and water at the halfway spot.’’

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and it is possible to enter on the day itself.

The ‘Red’ Sportive distance starts at 9am, while the ‘ Blue’ Challenge distance starts at 9.30am, the ‘ Yellow’ Easy Ride sets off at 10am and the ‘Green’ Family event starts either at 11am or at people’s own leisure.

Registration begins on the day at the Muthill Parish Church base from 8am.

Riders will be issued with a cycle number and chip to attach to their bike along with emergency contact numbers.

All routes will be marked with coloured arrows.

There will be food and drinks available for all participants after the ride in the village’s Bruce Hall.

All cyclists are expected to carry their own first- aid kit for minor injuries, although a trained first aider will be in Muthill and can be called upon if any accidents occur.

All cyclists are expected to carry a basic bike tool kit. A bike mechanic will be available at the registration point if anyone needs a quick ‘MOT’ before they set off.

The spokesperson continued: “This is an open road event. All cyclists take part at their own risk and are expected to ride to the rules of the road.

“An approved cycle helmet must be worn at all times while riding, as encouraged under British Cycling guidelines for non-competitive events.”

They continued: “Funding for the Muthill to Crieff cycle path is coming from various grants but the village also has to raise a certain amount.

“Money from entry fees goes towards the funding the event or the cycle path project.’’
