MSP asks all to join in census

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

A local politician has stressed the importance of people filling in their census forms.

Sunday, March 20, marked Census Day 2022.

The Scottish Government has issued letters to more than 2.7 million households nationwide, representing 5.5 million people, and the deadline for submissions is May 1.

Perthshire South and Kinross-shire MSP Jim Fairlie urged anyone yet to do so to take part.

He said:“I was pleased to hear from the Register General that the National Records of Scotland has received a high level of responses, with 78.2 per cent of households in Perth and Kinross having submitted their return.

“However, that figure is still below the response rate target and, while there are fewer than 700,000 households across the country which have still to complete their census return form, I would urge any of my constituents who are among that number to get their form filled in as soon as possible ahead of the deadline on May 1.

“As well as being an incredibly important source of information in the future, the census helps the government and other service providers make important decisions about vital things such as education, healthcare and employment. Indeed, completing the census is a legal responsibility and householders are responsible for making sure they respond.

“Anyone who hasn’t completed the census by the May 1 could face a fine, but there is a wide range of assistance available for anyone who needs help in getting it done.

“By taking a few minutes to answer questions about yourself, your household, and the place where you live, you play a vital role in helping shape important services in your community – from the building of new schools and hospitals to improving transport links and understanding health needs.

“The census only happens once a decade so makes sure you play a part.”
