Award for dedicated teacher

A popular teacher ’ s commitment and dedication to the industry has been recognised.

David Barnes, currently Senior Master at Strathalla­n School, recently received the Stephen Winkley Award.

This is the longestrun­ning Boarding School’s Associatio­n ( BSA) award, recognisin­g a lifetime of service dedicated to improving education and experience of students in Scotland and across the globe.

Mr Barnes has contribute­d to the life of the independen­t school near Bridge of Earn for over 40 years.

From his first few days as a resident tutor to 21 years as deputy head of pastoral and head of boarding, he has directly cared for and helped shape the lives of thousands of pupils in Scotland.

He has also raised tens of thousands of pounds for children in Kenya through the Strath Kenya Project.

On receiving the award, Mr Barnes said: “I feel very humbled. Education is a collaborat­ive process and I’m just blessed to be supported by such fantastic colleagues, wonderful young people and a passionate community.

“I would like to thank the BSA for their award and a huge thank you and love to my family who have stuck by me throughout.”

The judges of the award noted Mr Barnes was a “worthy winner”.

And they added: “He has dedicated his career to education, boarding, supporting young people and to school life.

“He has always been there at the coal face and sharp end while also finding time to be an expert in the crucial area of safeguardi­ng children. A role model for anyone working in the world of boarding.”

Strathalla­n School’s headmaster, Mark Lauder, paid tribute to Mr Barnes’ contributi­on.

“David is a tireless champion of our students and a brilliant role model for all of us,” he said.

“Whether he’s giving advice or setting up a safe space to discuss mental health during lockdown, he always been someone our pupils and staff can turn to.”
