Sony KD-65A1 Price £3599 / stuff.tv/kd65a1

Still not sure what all the fuss is about with OLED? An afternoon spent in front of one of Sony’s A1 sets will see you right. While the 55in model hits the sweet spot between price and pictorial finesse, this 65in colossus is a more like-for-like comparison with Samsung’s latest hopeful. It’s the same size, just a couple of hundred quid cheaper… and, most importantly, it’s pretty stunning to behold.

That’s not just in terms of picture quality – its ‘picture frame’ design is a beguiling

step up from the usual parade of generic rectangles you’ll find littered around your local Currys. Yep, the A1 is a TV with the class to match the cash it demands, and a Sony X1 image processor that can even out-finesse its fellow OLEDS.

The pure, inky blacks you’d expect from the tech are typically sublime, but it’s the brightness and contrast this A1 can muster that mark it out as a special one. The contrast is a notch up from what similar LGS and Panasonics are capable of. Its motion-related chops are rock solid too, with sharp, blur-free imagery – even when things start to go ‘boom’ in typical blockbuster fashion.

The A1 is at its best when handling 4K footage with HDR, but it’s a dab hand with Full HD and standard-def content too. So if your broadband is too slow to support Ultra HD Netflix or you simply don’t have the option to bask in 4K’s glories, you’ll still have a great time here.

The only real misstep is a set of overlapping user interfaces that come from meshing Android 7.0, Youview and Sony’s own settings menus. Still, all the major apps you’d expect to be featured are present, including Amazon Video so you can take advantage of its growing HDR library.
