You have to say that’s magnificent

The 12 Pro’s camera chops make a case for spending that extra £200 over the basic 12 on the next page

Attacking line-up

The 12 Pro scales new photographic heights with a seven-element-lens wide camera for low-light magic, an ultra-wide with 120° field of view, and a 52mm telephoto with 4x optical zoom.

Late tackle

All three 12MP rear cams and the 12MP selfie shooter can use Night mode, even for portraits. In fact, the 12 Pro lets in so much light that night shots don’t necessarily feel like night any more.

Long-range effort

The telephoto gives the Pro its most obvious edge over the 12. Coupled with that Lidar space-mapping sensor, the long-focus lens brings great bokeh effects, low-light boosts and Night mode snaps.

Professional fowl

The ability to shoot Dolby Vision 4K HDR videos at 60fps on a phone is hard to believe. Add ace image stabilisation for shaky hands, and disturbing swans becomes a new favourite pastime.*

The achievements of the iphone 12 Pro are evident everywhere – but who actually needs them? For some, the camera setup is the selling point, but an extra £100 bags you an even better one on the 12 Pro Max; and for the rest of us, the £799 iphone 12 will do fine. Is this a killer phone? Yes. Is it the iphone you should buy? We’re not so sure.
