Peugeot e-208 v VW ID.3

Clash of the compact cuties

-

What’s the story?

Rather than unleashing a glitzy electric sub-brand, like VW has with its ID range, Peugeot merely offers and electric version of its superbly stylish 208 model. So now, customers pick their paint, wheels and optional extras… before plumping for petrol, diesel or electric. We’d strongly suggest leaning towards the latter, because the 136hp electric motor and 50kwh battery-pack make this a brilliantly nippy and oh-so-stylish little number. In fact, it’s the quickest 208 in the line-up and the hottest model until a full-on GTI is maybe unveiled.

Is it any good?

The new 208 looks fantastic and this version is no different. For all its flared wheel-arches and fancy front lights it’s a much smaller car than the VW, but it doesn’t lack on the performance front – despite a slightly unimpressive 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds. Official range is a reasonable 217 miles, and it handles 100kw fast-charging for 20-minute top-ups. It feels special inside too, with a tiny flat-bottomed steering wheel that sits in the lap, go-kart style, and a flashy 3D effect on the digital instrument cluster standing out from the crowd. The Peugeot certainly feels the more avant-garde of these two EVS, and its tiny frame means it’s more fun around town.
