Oppo Find X3 Pro

From its zippy charger to its distinctively lumpy camera array, Oppo’s latest flagship phone has the looks and the specs to set it apart from some rather illustrious rivals

Our flagship phone fest kicks off with a lumpy lovely…

There’s no room for error at the top of the smartphone spectrum. So Oppo’s Find X3 Pro is a no-compromise flagship promising unique design elements, the best possible performance, a 60W fast charger in the box, and display clarity to rival any Samsung Galaxy or iphone… all while introducing a little microscopic photo magic to the mix.

It’s another glass and metal sandwich that’s 90% screen, with an in-display fingerprint sensor and punch-hole selfie camera in the corner. Flip it over, though, and the camera bump is dead; long live the camera bulge. Oppo has given its four-lens array curves that contour up and around, creating a smooth, bubble-like appearance.

The unibody construction must have been a nightmare to mass-produce but no other phone looks like this, slides into your pocket as smoothly, or hides fingerprint smudges as effectively. Slimmer than the old Find X2 Pro, it’s arguably less adventurous, but you do get IP68 water-resistance and a silicone case thrown in.

This isn’t the only exciting new mobile vying for your upgrade money this month, though. Once you’re done here, plough on for our reviews of the Oneplus 9, Oneplus 9 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 – but for now, turn over and prepare to be dazzled.

1 The clear hunter

The 6.7in OLED gets a crispy 3216x1440 resolution and 1300-nit peak brightness for HDR10+ content. The refresh rate is a slick 120Hz but that can drop all the way down to 5Hz, stretching out battery life if you’re mostly looking at static images.

2 The zing of comedy

End-to-end 10-bit colour means the cameras, software and screen can capture, process and display a whopping billion colours. Other phones? A measly 16 million. The benefit is better accuracy when watching HDR content. Netflix binges are a dream on this phone.

4 Maxi driver

“Thou shalt useth the very latest Qualcomm silicon.” Oppo has followed the first commandment well, pairing a Snapdragon 888 with 12GB of RAM. This chip has 5G, plays nicely with the latest Bluetooth and Wi-fi speeds, and is up there with the current best.

3 Meet the hair-ends

When it comes to cameras, the Find X3 Pro does things a little differently (see panel, right). Extreme zoom is out, unbeatable close-ups are in, with one lens dedicated to microphotography: for subjects so small they can’t be seen with the human eye.

5 The prod-father

The latest version of Coloros, Oppo’s spin on Android, is slick. It used to be an IOS knock-off but has transformed into a highly customisable interface that doesn’t overwhelm with features. Most of the advanced functions are switched off by default.

?? ?? In almost every respect, the X3 Pro is a killer flagship phone. Oppo’s software has taken a major leap forward and the hardware is easily on a par with Apple and Samsung. Losing the periscope zoom is a shame, but if you want the best you pay the premium… and the Find X3 Pro is very much one of the best. @Tommorgan3
