Matter’s list of supporters reads like a who’s-who of tech: it includes Apple, Google, Samsung, Amazon, Hue, Ikea and many, many more. That’s key, because it means Matter should become widely available very quickly on all kinds of smart home kit.

Matter is designed to work with multiple smart home technologies: Bluetooth LE, Wi-fi, Zigbee, Z-wave, Thread and others. It’s about enabling different devices to communicate, no matter how those communications are transmitted.

IT COULD CUT PRICES

By opening up the various smart home ecosystems to all the key manufacturers, Matter also massively increases the competition between those device makers. That should result not just in better devices for everybody, but also in potentially lower prices.
