When people reach for a stick to beat Apple with, it’s usually the one marked ‘form over function’. How else do you explain the decision to ditch the headphone socket from the iphone or lose almost all the ports from the Macbook Air? With the Mac Studio, though, Apple has prioritised function so much that it looks more like a fancy server than a computer.
For starters, it’s absolutely riddled with ports, slots and sockets. There are 13 in total, including two USB-C and an SD card reader on the front plus four Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI on the back. And you’ll need them, because this is the most powerful machine Apple has ever built.
There are two chip configurations: the M1 Max, which comes with a 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU and 32GB of RAM, or the M1 Ultra, which doubles everything (including the price). Opt for the latter and you’re getting a machine that’s 50% faster than the Mac Pro, but both can be upgraded. Throw in up to 8TB of storage and Wi-fi 6, and this little silver box is pretty much the ultimate marriage of form and function. As hot as… your old PC trying to keep up from £1999 / apple.com
