FUJIFILM X-H2S

-

The X-H2S brings new-found continuous shooting abilities to

Fuji’s X range, thanks to a fifth-gen image sensor that rattles off an astonishing 40 frames per second. That should raise wildlife and sports snappers’ eyebrows, while improved video support and ergonomic changes will please everyone else.

It ditches the double-stacked ISO and aperture dials in favour of a single mode dial and fewer physical controls. That widens the appeal to those coming from rival camera systems, but will irk Fuji diehards. Not that it takes long to adjust: the layout is superb, with every crucial button perched near your thumb or index finger.

The 3in touchscreen flips out for angled shooting, or around for vlogging, and the

LCD on the top is very handy for at-a-glance aperture or shutter speed checks. But the OLED EVF is the standout, with exceptional clarity and a rapid 120fps live view that ensures what you see is what you capture.

Movie makers get a dedicated record button, full-size HDMI output and twin 3.5mm ports for a mic and headphones. Recordings max out at 6.2K resolution and 30fps with no 30-minute limit. Just note you’ll need a Cfexpress card to cope with the ultra-large files… or just stick to good old-fashioned Full HD.

The pixel count might not be a big upgrade over the outgoing X-H1, but colours remain as pleasing as ever, with rich yet true-to-life hues. Skin tones are natural, and it captures loads of dynamic range. There’s no shortage of detail, regardless of lighting, and the sensor is really adept at high ISOS. Film simulation also returns for adding even more impact without stepping into Insta filter territory.

Subject detection isn’t perfect, meaning some photographic knowhow is still needed for fast-moving subjects – but if you’ve got the need for speed, the X-H2S guarantees Fuji a spot on your shortlist.
