1 GLOW UP

The Nothing Phone 1’s lights do a lot more than blink when it rings. In settings, select ‘Glyph interface’ and tap ‘Ringtones’ to select specific tones and light patterns for individual contacts. Tap ‘Flip to glyph’ to silence the phone when you turn it over

(so you get a light flash but no sound). If you select ‘Charging meter’, the light bar by the USB-C port will show you how topped up it is when plugged in.

4 SAVE UP

The Phone 1’s battery isn’t the best we’ve tested. If you want to eke out a little extra, dial back some features. In the settings, select ‘Display’ then ‘Display refresh rate’, and pick ‘Standard’ This alone can boost battery life by close to 60%. Next, turn off adaptive brightness and keep things as dim as you can work with. Finally, turn on ‘Battery saver’ to limit power drain in the background.

2 TIDY UP

The Phone 1’s home screen is that bit more customisable than most. You can double an icon’s size by long-pressing it and selecting ‘Enlarge’; and if you long-press an empty space on your home screen the ‘Home’ settings option should pop up. Tap it and you can declutter the space by getting rid of the Google search bar and news screen, and stop new apps from filling up your tidy new home.

5 PLAY UP

A lot of phones have a gaming mode, and this is one of them… but it’s buried deep within the settings and you have to add games manually. Open settings and navigate to ‘System’, then ‘Game mode’. Here you can add games, control what features are set to ‘Do not disturb’ when gaming, and fire up mistouch prevention. Now when you open up a linked game, a controller icon tells you you’re in the mode.

3 OFFER UP

Qualcomm customised the Snapdragon processor inside the Phone 1 to support reverse wireless charging, so it can fuel up your headphones or another phone. To enable power sharing, go to the battery settings and select ‘Battery share’. You can add a shortcut for this feature by swiping down twice from the top of the screen, tapping the pencil icon then dragging it into your quick toggles menu.

6 LIGHT UP

On top of packing a very good camera, the Phone 1 has a few photo and video tricks – the most notable being its glyph fill light. With the camera open, keep tapping the LED flash icon until you see a ‘C’ with three dots around it. Now the back of your phone will beam with a softer, more even light than a flash. This is especially useful when snapping close-ups with the Phone 1’s macro feature.
