GNARLY PERFECT

More shooters that are at least as extreme as you

DJI Pocket 2

This tiny 64MP camera isn’t waterproof, rugged or great in low light, but it offers one hell of a secret weapon: a three-axis gimbal that keeps your footage beautifully stable and smooth.

It’s tiny and weighs just 117g, making it extremely easy to whip out of your pocket when you need to capture a quick clip in style. It’s an action cam you can take everywhere.

Insta360 X3

This pocket-sized 360° cam opens up a whole new way to capture footage: record everything everywhere all at once, then choose where to ‘point’ the camera later on in the editing process. It even deletes your selfie-stick automatically, making the camera appear to float in mid-air. Superb auto-levelling and stabilisation make it brilliantly easy to use too. £460 / insta360.com

Gopro Hero11 Black

Gopro is the market leader for good reason, and its flagship model is still the best overall action cam around. It’s not just the sturdiness, small size and best-in-class image stabilisation that make it top dog – there’s also its innovative 8:7 sensor, which captures footage across its whole surface, allowing you to instantly crop to your preferred aspect ratio later on.

Olympus Tough TG-6

It’s getting on in years now, but the 12MP Tough TG-6 remains the best rugged point-and-shoot camera you can buy. About as durable as a Challenger tank and waterproof to 15m (or 45m with the optional underwater housing), it thrives in any environment, and is especially adept at taking underwater photos thanks to its large-aperture anti-fog lens and RAW image capture.

Insta360 Flow

Much like the Pocket 2, this compact rig benefits from a three-axis gimbal. In this case, though, you mount your smartphone on it – turning an everyday mobile into a freakishly steady stabilised camera able to closely track moving subjects. It also features a built-in tripod and selfie stick, plus a 2900mah battery that can double as a powerbank for your phone.

Akaso Brave 7 LE

If affordability is key, this Gopro lookalike is well worth a look. Naturally, at this price point it comes with caveats (it can only shoot 4K at 30fps and is rated a mere IPX7 for water-resistance), but its solid image quality and effective stabilisation make it a perfect cheap choice for vloggers. It even has a second screen on the front like the DJI Osmo Action 3.
