NOW TRY THIS...

1 STARE FOR FLAIR

If you don’t have Face Unlock active, using the Razr’s cover screen will be a pain in the rump: anything more in-depth than telling the time will require you to fumble your way around the phone to access the fingerprint scanner, or punch in your passcode. To unlock cover screen apps and features with a glance, activate the feature by going to Settings > Security > Face Unlock.

4 TWEAK FOR A STREAK

Unless you spend most of your time in the Razr’s cover screen, you’re likely to hit some stamina issues in your time with this phone. To help your clamshell cling on for a bit longer, activate your most-used apps to work on the front display. It’s much more energy-efficient, even if it is a bit of a squeeze. Also try the Battery Saver mode, the dark theme, and dropping the refresh rate to 60Hz.

2 ADD APPS FOR TAPS

Unlike other flip phones, the Razr runs third-party apps on the cover screen natively. Swipe to the left of your home screen for the app grid – you won’t see many here just yet, but if you scroll to the bottom, select Manage Apps and check the ones you want, they’ll be accessible on the cover screen thereafter. Don’t expect totally smooth sailing – Zoom, for example, doesn’t display well.

5 FOLD FOR GOLD

The Razr’s camera can’t match non-folding flagships. To help it along, half-fold the phone and set it on a flat surface. Open the camera app and you’ll see the interface push the live preview into the top half and the camera controls into the bottom half. This creates a tripod-like level of steadiness – and you can now jump into Pro mode for longer shutter speeds, bringing even better clarity.

3 FLICK FOR A PIC

Even with Face Unlock active, you won’t want to waste a second swiping and tapping when you’re presented with a selfie opportunity – and with Quick Capture, you won’t have to. Open the Moto app, select Gestures and activate Quick Capture. Whether your Razr is open or closed, a wrist-flick will fire up the camera in an instant. The Moto app is also the place to activate other neat shortcuts.

6 GO RAW FOR MORE

The camera captures shots with high contrast and plenty of saturation – great for quick snaps and Whatsapp shares, but not for nuanced edits. If you want subtlety, take a RAW photo then edit it afterwards: open the camera app and switch to Pro mode, then tap the icon that says ‘JPG’ until it changes to ‘RAW’. To edit RAW photos, you’re better off with a dedicated app like Lightroom.
