This is a great backpack – the new design not only looks great but is super-comfortable to wear, even when it’s fully loaded for a day’s hiking. We took it up on the moors, to the beach, to a meeting and on a Friday night pub run, and it worked for the lot. This is a great choice if you want one backpack that you can use for everything.

We really loved testing this backpack – not only is it durable, but it feels light despite weighing 900g and is comfortable on both back and shoulders. We took it hiking, cycling and commuting, and are happy to recommend it for all three – it’s a fine option if you’re in need of a robust weekend bag that you can also use for work.

Patagonia Black Hole What’s the story?
This 32L workhorse is well made, light and rugged. Made from weather-resistant 100%-recycled body fabric, lining and webbing, it’s also Fair Trade Certified sewn, which means you know the people who made it were properly paid for their labour. There’s an easy-access main zipped compartment, stash pockets and a 15in padded laptop pocket.
Is it any good?
If we were picking a medium-sized backpack to take on an expedition, this would be it.
The air-mesh back panel is comfy, as are the shoulder straps; the haul handle is really strong and there are also daisy-chains for lashing, in case you’re off on a real adventure and need more space. It got full marks in our testing and could have handled a lot more.
