Updating pieces with a lick of paint is easier than you think and a thrifty way to save. Look in charity shops, at carboot sales and even in skips (ask first!) for solid wood pieces with potential. Check they’re free from woodworm, sand off any paint or varnish and apply primer. Then pick your paint in a chalky, matt or gloss finish. You’ll also need a set of flat brushes and floor protection – any old sheet will do. Protect your finished piece with clear varnish or wax.
