Add a compact ledge at the end of a run of worktop (or along the edge of a peninsula). Make it semi-circular if space is really tight – this will give you enough space for a couple of bar stools.

Fit a wall-hung table – you could even use a drop-leaf one so that you can fold it up when it’s not in use. Pair it with a folding stool.

Steal ideas from small spaces like boats or caravans and add a section of worktop that slides or folds out when extra surface is needed.
