CREATE CONTINUITY

-

Creating flow between the rooms in your house helps the space feel put-together. Even if there’s a lot going on, repeating recognisable accents will ensure your design feels cohesive.

Identify a colour scheme. Choose a palette of three key colours and decide on some accent shades. Paint the walls, buy comfy cushions and source crockery in your chosen colours.

Choose a theme for accessories, be it travel, flowers or animals. A leopard print rug, an abstract safari print and a House of Hackney cheetah lampstand subtly hint at your scheme throughout.

small. Therefore, instead of a big kitchen island that takes up a lot of space, we chose a long dining table, which can double up as a food prep area when we need it. I also wanted there to be a richness to the kitchen and, as I knew there would be plenty of light from the glass we were adding in, we went for dark cabinets to create a dramatic flair.

Favourite space

One of the features that most appealed to me when I viewed the house was the potential to turn the loft into a gorgeous bedroom suite. We’ve built in a mezzanine floor to create the illusion of more space as you can see the double height ceiling. It also feels more luxurious as we have the lower section for our dressing area, then placed our bed and, most excitingly, a bathtub on the loft floor. It’s the most expensive thing we bought for the house.

Rising to the challenge

Although we love our house now, the renovation wasn’t without its difficulties. Shortly after the project began, Stolly and I caught a tropical disease while abroad on our honeymoon. We were very poorly, and I had trouble with short-term memory for a little while, which proved tricky while renovating. What’s more, halfway

through the build we were robbed by a gang who had been targeting local building sites. I was really frightened of our area for a while afterwards as the burglary felt so invasive. When the matter was cleared up by the police, it was a huge relief. Now I love living here and have felt safe here ever since we moved in.

Worth the work

I just love the space we’ve made in what really is a small cottage. There’s only one tiny square of corridor in the whole house that doesn’t serve a purpose. The rest is usable space, so it’s very efficient. Although it was difficult at times, now the renovation is complete we are so happy here – and so is Toothless! I wouldn’t change a thing.’
