Don’t have the space to accommodate a freestanding island? A peninsula can sit in the same space but simply connects to a wall – so what would have been a walkway becomes additional workspace instead.

A peninsula doesn’t have to be overly long, but just a metre or two will provide valuable extra prep space.

Leaving an overhang on one side of a peninsula will give space for high stools to create a breakfast bar or dining space.

It can act as a half-wall between the kitchen and living space in an open-plan room, zoning the areas without completely separating them.
