4 ways with… KITCHEN LIGHTING

A versatile scheme will deliver the right level of brightness

MAKE A STATEMENT

Kitchen lighting isn’t just about practicalities – it’s important to have some fun, too. Why not choose a statement pendant, such as Melt by Tom Dixon shown here, to create a dramatic focal point in a larger room? If possible, position it directly above your island or kitchen table so that it can help with task lighting, too, and link its colour to other elements, such bar stools and the range cooker. Additional wall lights illuminate worktops at the side of the room.

ABOUT ME I’m Franky Ridgeon, an interiors architect, and I live with my partner Jack Mayhew, owner of a sustainable meat products company, and two-year-old son Max.

MY HOME A three-bedroom Victorian terraced house in Greenwich, southeast London, which we bought in 2019.

WHEN WE MOVED IN The house had been student accommodation for 15 years and it had an awkward layout, with lots of small rooms and an unsightly extension.

AND NOW We’ve renovated it, reconfigured the layout and added a loft conversion. It’s now cheerful and welcoming – a feelgood house.

STYLE TIP I used strong blocks of colour to define the different living areas in the open-plan space.
