Paint an OMBRE SIDEBOARD

Give a plain cabinet a chic and colourful update with an easy paint treatment

-

With the cost of living on the rise, buying brand new furniture may not be in your budget right now. If that’s the case, why not give a pre-loved piece a new look instead?

If you’re moving home or just fancy a room refresh, then upcycling existing pieces is the perfect thrifty way to save money and prevent items ending up in landfill. This chic ombré sideboard project is a great solution for sprucing up a tired cabinet and adding a splash of colour to your decor. You could use leftover paint from another project or buy smaller tester pots to cover each section. What’s more, this super-easy update can easily be done in a day!

YOU WILL NEED

Sideboard Screwdriver Sandpaper Masking tape Paint in four different shades Paintbrush or mini roller Varnish

REMOVE THE DOORS

Carefully remove the sideboard doors using a screwdriver, making sure not to damage the carcass. Keep all the screws safe in a little zip-lock bag so they don’t get lost. Lay the doors out on the floor on an old sheet or some cardboard to protect the surface beneath.

PLAN YOUR COLOUR PALETTE

Next, plan out four equal sections on the doors and assign a paint shade to each. To achieve an ombré effect, use the darkest colour on one end of the doors and work towards the lightest colour on the other end of the sideboard.

PREP THE DOORS

If the doors have previously been painted or varnished, use a fine-grade sandpaper to create a key on the surface. When you have finished, wipe down with a cloth to remove any dust particles.

PAINT THE FIRST SECTIONS

Mask the first sections out, making sure to go around the edges, too – we only want the front of the doors to be painted. Use a painter’s masking tape to get the best results. Paint the first section on each door using a paintbrush or small roller for larger flat surfaces. Leave to dry completely.

COMPLETE THE PAINTING

Once the first sections of the doors are dry, carefully remove the masking tape around the painted areas. Repeat the masking off and painting for the remaining two sections and colours. Leave to dry completely.

FINISH WITH VARNISH

Peel off the masking tape and apply several coats of varnish to the doors to protect them from knocks and scratches. Once completely dry, reattach the doors to the sideboard with the screws you that you had kept safe earlier.
