Charlotte’s choice: DECKING

Keep your decking in pristine condition so you can enjoy it all summer long – here’s how to spruce it up

-

As the weather warms up, we’ll all want to spend more time in our gardens, so now’s the time to get things spick and span. Algae and moss can grow on decking, making it slippery. If its looking past its best, here’s how to smarten it up.

How do I prep the deck?

Start by removing everything – furniture, pots, barbecue, ornaments. It’s best to work on a clear day when the deck is dry; allow a few days to pass after a downpour. Give it a thorough sweep to remove debris from between the cracks as best you can.

What cleaning product should I use?

For a gentler clean use washing up liquid diluted in warm water. Be careful not to scrub with anything too abrasive, and avoid rubbing against the grain.

‘You can use soap and water, but a specialist product such as Jeyes Patio and Decking Power will be better at getting rid of stubborn moss and algae,’ says Sophie Herrmann, spokesperson for Jeyes Fluid. ‘Mix it with water, pour it on and leave it to do its work.’ Follow the instructions on how to apply, timings and how to rinse off.

How do I get rid of built-up grime?

‘Tackling your decking with a pressure washer will spray away moss and grime,’ says Sophie. ‘Ensure the pressure washer setting is suitable for your decking or it could potentially damage the surface’

Do I need a stripper?

If your decking is particularly dirty, try a product like Ronseal Decking Stripper. ‘You’ll need to wear gloves and give the tin a shake before use,’ says Jimmy Englezos, senior product manager for Ronseal. ‘Apply with a large brush in a thick layer. It takes around 30 minutes to work. If it’s a hot day and patches are drying out, re-apply where needed. Then scrub with warm water, wash it all off with a hose, and you’re done!’.
