Choose the base of the vanity unit, bearing in mind that it needs to be sturdy enough to support the weight of the basin and top and provide sufficient counter space. Look for something around 80cm high. Clean and sand the unit, then customise by repainting and fitting new handles.

Pick your basin and taps. Countertop basins are best paired with wall-mounted taps or tall taps that bring height to the scheme. Call your plumber to fit the drainage pipe and plumb in the taps.

Apply several coats of marinegrade varnish to give the wooden surface extra protection every few months. Alternatively, you could use a slab of marble or stone for your countertop.
