THIS WEEK’S IMPONDERABLE... Why do our stomachs rumble when we are hungry?
Our stomachs make noises all the time. The thing is, when we are not hungry, we don’t hear our thick, strong stomach muscles continually squeezing. However, when we are hungry, the noise of that squeezing, alternately contracting and relaxing, is made louder by the fact that our stomachs are empty. To illustrate the point, imagine a drum. If you stuffed it full of rags or tissues, you would not be able to make much noise with it but if you took away the rags or tissues (ie emptied it), it would be a lot louder.
