Loves making music

cowboy boots. Carl Hayman once came as a nun. Thankfully there are no photographs of us. We will get a team photo next time.

On other occasions we would have a game of football in the garden in fancy dress.

It was never just band practice, there were always added extras. I realise that spare time outside of rugby can get a little boring, hence the need to liven it up.

Ultimately you have to have an outlet and you need some way of relieving the pressure.

I’m glad we never played to an audience because we would have then started to think about the mistakes we’d made. At least I would have. I am a perfectionist and I always have high expectations of what I can do, much higher than anyone else’s.

I did not like being out in front on stage, which could be a problem with performing. I once did that with a band, The Clack, and felt very uncomfortable.

Towards the end of the band, before we split up, I thought we were actually getting somewhere. We made some noise.

Recently my guitar playing has had something of a renaissance thanks, in no small part, to Carl Hayman coming to play at Toulon, the same club as me in France. We have struck up another band. It’s great fun. My obsession with the guitar has stepped up a level.

For the past nine months I’ve been composing music. I sit on the sofa and the songs that I think have got any potential are the ones that I can remember and play again.

I would love to try to follow them through but my lyric writing is awful. More importantly I am still obsessive about rugby. Until that stops, music will always come second.
