Jess: I’m fine for Olympics

- ATHLETICS By Colin Bateman

JESS ENNIS finished her Olympic build-up on a rain-swept club track in the heart of England yesterday in front of barely 300 hardy athletics fans huddled on a muddy grass bank.

It was a far cry to what Ennis, above, the heptathlon poster girl of London 2012, can expect when she steps out in front of 80,000 at the Olympic Stadium in 25 days time.

The Loughborough European Athletics Permit meeting was about as homely as you can get, and Ennis was delighted with her low key surroundings as she ironed out the gremlins in her malfunctioning long jump.

“It is fine being here,” said Britain’s golden hope. “I am used to meets like this and happy to do my last bit of preparation here.”

Her best jump was a modest 6.21, well down on her best of 6.51, but having produced only one legitimate jump out of six at the recent Olympic trials, she was happy enough.

“I was not pleased with the distance today, but after the trials I had to go away and make some changes to my run-up and focus just getting on the board and not fouling,” she added.

“I felt a lot more comfortable in the run-up today. I was pleased with that, now I have to work on the flight and make it all come together.”

A solid set of javelin throws in the rain – a best of 44.73 – also satisfied Ennis, who will now head for training camp in Portugal to fine tune her seven events for London.
