Blot on Brontë country

- By Ruth Hughes

THE BEAUTY spot made famous by the Bronte sisters has been turned into a dumping ground by fly-tippers.

More than 150 tyres have been scattered across picturesque moorland above Haworth, the West Yorkshire village once home to the literary trio.

Local residents are calling for urgent action at Penistone Hill Country Park to deter and catch the culprits who are repeatedly dumping the scrap tyres.

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte wrote most of their famous works while living at the Haworth Parsonage, now a museum owned by the Bronte Society. The beautiful West Yorkshire landscape fuelled the sisters’ imagination and featured heavily in their famous novels, including Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, earning itself the nickname Bronte Country.

Mia Wasikowska also starred in the film version of Jane Eyre at the iconic location, a major tourist attraction.

Local councillor Rebecca Poulsen said: “It was an atrocious example of fly-tipping. I think we should have a zero tolerance approach to flytipping.” She is now calling for CCTV to be installed in the area, adding: “It is clearly a tyre business and the council will be looking for evidence when the tyres are removed. This is completely unacceptable behaviour.”

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said: “Another load of tyres has been dumped in an area of Penistone Hill Country Park, for the second time in a week, which Bradford Council will clean up as soon as practicable.

“Discussions are ongoing about how to prevent further fly-tipping in the area. No decisions have been taken as yet. We also need people to help us against this menace.”
