Second EU referendum would betray country

-

P

RIME Minister Theresa May is right to say that a second referendum would be a dreadful betrayal of this country, its people and democracy.

Reports that the Labour leadership is now on the verge of backing another EU vote are extremely disturbing. No doubt Labour’s apparent conversion is a cold political calculation that it would destroy the Conservative Party – probably correct.

But the reality is that the people such as Chuka Umunna, Anna Soubry and their wealthy friends like Gina Miller who want a so-called “people’s vote” are members of the Remainer elite who never accepted the last result.

Contempt for the real “people” has never been far below the surface and they are dismissed as racists and stupid.

Now we know Tony Blair, the Remainerin-chief, has been undermining attempts to get a good deal with the EU by running parallel negotiations with Brussels to ease the path for another vote. It shows an appalling level of arrogance.

Let us be clear, the people have already voted, they knew what they voted for despite a Project Fear campaign to dissuade them and they want to leave the EU.

A second referendum will destroy trust in British politics and democracy for a generation and will cause bitter division when the country needs to come together.
